Eddie Murphy is a cult American comedian whose finest hour fell on the 80s. Paintings such as 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Policeman, Trip to America, Swap, Dr. Dolittle and many others made him a star of the first magnitude. In addition, Murphy is known both as a musician who recorded several solo albums, and as a stand-up comedian.
Eddie was born in New York Brooklyn and became the second child in the family: his parents already had the eldest son Charlie, who also became an actor. The boys’ mother, whose name was Lillian, worked as a telephone operator, and father Charles Edward Murphy served in the police. Despite the fact that Papa Eddie died when he was only 8 years old, it is obvious that it was from his father that the boy inherited acting talent – Charles performed at the amateur level in the theater, and also gave performances as a comedian.
After the death of his father, Eddie and his brother Charlie lived in a foster family for a year, since for her mother the loss of her husband was such a huge tragedy that she ended up in the hospital. Later, the woman married Vernon Lynch, an employee of the ice cream company, and took the children.
Murphy showed his gift of making people laugh in elementary school, which made him popular with classmates and even teachers. From the age of 15, Eddie has already performed in clubs with copyrighted jokes, and it was just as a stand-up comedian who achieved his first recognition.
Thanks to humor, Eddie Murphy got on television and appeared for several years in the mega-popular weekly show “Saturday Night Live”, in which he performed several roles at once. And from this show program, the actor stepped into the cinema.
In 1982, Eddie Murphy made his debut in the police comedy “48 Hours” and instantly woke up famous. The following films, “Swap”, “The Best Way to Defend”, “Golden Child” and especially “Trip to America” made him one of the most beloved actors of the 80s.
But the greatest success was achieved by the criminal comedy “Beverly Hills Police Officer”, in which Murphy played detective Axel Fowley. It is interesting that Sylvester Stallone was originally supposed to represent this character, but for certain circumstances the directors and producers replaced him with Eddie, and, as time has shown, they did not fail.
Later, the actor had a creative crisis. To overcome it, he himself sat in the director’s chair and created the film “Harlem Nights.” The picture had good box office, but it was harshly criticized by experts and even received the Golden Raspberry Award for the worst-case scenario.
Eddie Murphy returned his favor to his person again using the grotesque comedy The Nutty Professor. In the new century, the actor continued to delight fans with his works: “The Haunted Mansion”, “The Tricks of Norbith”, “How to Steal a Skyscraper”, “Thousand Words”. Murphy’s only non-comedic role in his career cannot be ignored: in the musical drama “Dream Girls,” he portrayed R&B singer James Earley.
The actor also created a completely brilliant voice acting donkey in the cult animated film “Shrek.” This cartoon has repeatedly provided the actor with work. In 2004 and 2007, numbered sequels were released, and in 2007, the short Christmas cartoon Shrek Frost, Green Nose was released, and in 2010 Shrek Forever. Then two more short animated films appeared in the same franchise: “Christmas Donkey Shreaktakl” and “Shrek’s Exciting Stories”.
The actor also performed a number of songs that sounded in the animated finale. In the first film, the famous “I’m a Believer” was voiced by Eddie Murphy, and in the second film, along with Antonio Banderas, who voiced the role of the cat in boots, he quit Ricky Martin’s hit “Livin ‘La Vida Loca”.
But even the box-office animated franchise could not return the comedian to its former popularity.
In 2010, Eddie Murphy received the Golden Raspberry Award in the Jubilee Actor of the Decade nomination. The organizers called the films “The Adventures of Pluto Nash”, “Deceive Everyone”, “Imagine”, “Meet: Dave”, “Tricks of the Norbit” and “The Show Begins” the reason for the nomination, for whose participation the actor has been nominated for the same antipremy, but in classic nominations.
In 2012, Eddie Murphy was recognized as the most overrated and unprofitable Hollywood star. It turns out that the actor among all colleagues with similar fees brings film companies the smallest income. According to estimates by Forbes magazine, which compiled this list, for every dollar spent on actor’s fees, producers get an average of 2.3 back.
Also decisive for placing Eddie Murphy at the head of the list of revalued celebrities was the actor’s refusal to host the prestigious Academy Award in the same 2012. It has already been announced that the actor will hold the 84th Academy Award ceremony, but Eddie Murphy flatly refused to speak.
The reason for this act, the actor called the removal from the post of producer of the director Brett Ratner, who called Murphy to lead the ceremony.
